St. Paul police investigating after gun falls out of student’s backpack

An investigation is ongoing after a gun fell out of a student’s backpack as he was preparing to leave school Wednesday afternoon.

According to the St. Paul Police Department, officers were called to the Community School of Excellence after a teacher found a handgun that had fallen out of the 14-year-old student’s backpack.

The teacher secured the handgun, police said, and accompanied the student to speak with officers.

The student told police he found the gun in his father’s bedroom and "thought it would be cool to bring to school," police said.

Police said it did not appear any threats were made.

The incident remains under investigation.
