St. Paul City Council places discussion on early childhood care, education on hold for next week

UPDATE 7/21 – Voters in St. Paul may get to determine whether the city establishes a special fund to subsidize early child care and education.

The St. Paul City Council is considering adding a question to the November ballot that would allow for a tax increase to pay for it over the next 10 years.

The city expects it to bring in $2.6 million to cover the cost of child care and education for low-income families.

Council members held a meeting Wednesday, and decided to put the plan on hold. The topic will be brought up again next week.

If approved, votes would decide its fate in November.

INITIAL REPORT 7/20 – The St. Paul City Council will take up a ballot question Wednesday to offer early childhood education to families across the city.

The measure would pay for thousands of kids to attend those early education opportunities, such as preschool.

If approved, the funding for the plan would come from property tax increases over the next 10 years, starting at about $20 in 2023 and rising to $200 in 2033.

If approved, supporters hope to get the question on the November ballot in St. Paul.

Wednesday’s meeting starts at 3:30 p.m.
