Nurses at Mayo Clinic in Mankato seek deunionization

More than 200 nurses at the Mayo Clinic Health System location in Mankato are seeking an end to their union representation.

The National Right to Work Legal Defense Foundation says the health care workers signed a petition to remove the Minnesota Nurses Association.

The employees say MNA union officials have a monopoly over bargaining at Mayo Clinic. If they successfully vote to deunionize, MNA also wouldn’t be able to impose forced dues and fees as a condition of getting or keeping their jobs.

Foundation officials say they’ve recently helped workers with similar efforts in Kansas, Illinois and Delaware.

Officials say the decertification vote is set for July 25.

MNA provided the following statement from Tammie Fromm, an operating room registered nurse at Mayo Clinic Mankato and a MNA negotiating team member:

“The more than 950 MNA nurses of Mayo Clinics are the union – together, we have successfully bargained for better contracts, organized for adequate PPE in the early days of the pandemic, and petitioned for adequate staffing levels to keep nurses at the bedside. We will continue to organize together to retain nurses and protect patient care in our communities.”
