Moorhead man pleads guilty to illegal firearm possession

A Moorhead man pleaded guilty Tuesday in federal court to one count of possessing a firearm as a felon, according to a news release from United States Attorney Andrew Luger.

Martin Torres, Jr., was arrested on March 13 by the Clay County Sheriff’s Office after officials say he tried to flee a traffic stop and resisted arrest. After Torres’ arrest, officers found a loaded Hi-Point Model C-9, 9 mm caliber pistol in his jacket pocket, according to court officials.

Torres is prohibited from possessing a firearm or ammunition due to his prior felony convictions in Clay County, Minn. and Cass County, N.D., prosecutors said.

The case was investigated by both the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and the Clay County Sheriff’s Office, according to court officials.

A sentencing hearing for Torres has not yet been scheduled.
