Man sentenced to 5 years in fatal Brooklyn Center shooting

A man was sentenced Monday to five years in prison in connection to a shooting that killed a woman in November 2021 in Brooklyn Center.

Court documents show 24-year-old Julius Smith pleaded guilty to and was sentenced on one count of second-degree manslaughter.

Brooklyn Center and Minneapolis police officers responded to the 5600 block of Girard Avenue North at around at 2:12 p.m. on Nov. 11, 2021, on a report of a person who had been shot.

Police found the victim a short while later — lying on the ground near a pickup truck that had a bullet hole in the windshield. The woman was taken to a hospital but died from her injuries a few days after the shooting.
