Man, security exchange gunfire on Abbott Northwestern campus

An exchange of gunfire led to some damage on the campus of Abbott Northwestern Hospital Monday.

Allina Health says security officers made contact with a man who they believed was under the influence of a controlled substance and had a gun early Monday morning.

The man and security officers then exchanged fire on the hospital campus.

While one of the hospital’s exterior walls had some damage, as did a window at Courage Kenny Rehabilitation Institute, the hospital says no patients or staff were injured.

In a statement to 5 EYEWITNESS NEWS, Allina said, “Providing a safe and secure environment for our patients and staff is of the highest importance to Allina Health.”

Minneapolis police were notified of the incident and are now investigating, according to Allina Health.

Police say officers arrested a suspect and recovered a gun.
