On Oct. 12 at about 7:40 p.m., a Minnesota Department of Natural Resources conservation officer was told that a dog had been shot and killed, according to a criminal complaint. The family that owned the dog said it had wandered onto neighboring property when Schroeder shot it with an arrow.

The complaint states he claimed the dog was chasing deer and “ruining his hunt,” but he later apologized to the family and offered to pay for a new dog, saying he regretted his decision.

His sentencing is set for June 3.
