Man dies after Freeborn Co. motorcycle crash

One man is dead after a motorcycle crash Monday night in Freeborn County, the sheriff’s office says.

The driver was identified as 71-year-old Larry Kenneth Helgeson of Rose Creek.

Just after 6 p.m. Monday, authorities received a call about a motorcycle crash with a potential fatality at 145th Street and 890th Avenue, about four miles east of Myrtle.

When they arrived, responders confirmed Helgeson was dead.

The sheriff’s report says the driver was likely going too fast when entering a curve and braked hard. He then crossed over the westbound lane and followed the curve before hitting the shoulder, flipping and flying from the bike.

The motorcycle was found in the ditch, and Helgeson was found nearby.

Authorities add Helgeson wasn’t wearing a helmet and suffered “major head trauma” in the crash.

The Freeborn County Sheriff’s Office is still investigating the incident.
