Lightning strike believed to be cause of Edina house fire

A lightning strike early Monday morning is believed to be what caused a fire at an Edina home.

The city of Edina said firefighters were called to the 6600 block of Sally Lane at about 2:38 a.m. after the homeowner reported smelling something burning.

Crews arrived and found a fire on the back of the home extending up the exterior wall and into the roof and attic space. Authorities said most of the fire damage was contained in the roof and attic space but the home did sustain some smoke and water damage.

Fortunately, nobody was injured.

"Smoke alarms did eventually sound, which can be a life saver," said Fire Marshal Rick Hammerschmidt. "Make sure to test smoke alarms monthly and practice fire drills with a designated meeting place outside."
