Inmate found dead at Rush City prison

An inmate at Minnesota Correctional Facility-Rush City is dead after being found unresponsive in his cell, according to the Minnesota Department of Corrections.

According to a DOC spokesperson, around 7 p.m. Wednesday, 26-year-old Derrick Deangelo Catchings was discovered unresponsive in his cell. DOC staff began performing life-saving measures, but Catchings was pronounced dead by EMS responders about 30 minutes after being discovered.

An autopsy is being performed by the Midwest Medical Examiners Office to determine his cause of death, and the incident is currently under investigation, the DOC says.

Catchings began his sentence on Jan. 3, 2013, according to a DOC spokesperson. Court records show Catchings pleaded guilty to two counts of second-degree murder and two counts of second-degree assault in 2013.
