Hopkins council approves resolution supporting Ukrainian sister city

As the Russian invasion of Ukraine continues, the city of Hopkins is supporting Ukraine.

Tuesday night, the Hopkins City Council unanimously passed a resolution supporting its Ukrainian sister city, Boryspil, which is located just to the east of Kyiv.

City Manager Mike Mornson noted at the meeting that the city hosted Ukrainian visitors in 2011 — when the sister city relationship was officially formed — and also hosted Ukrainian students a year later. He added that many residents have been calling and wondering how they can help their sister city since even before Russia’s invasion started.

Former Mayor Jason Gadd also spoke at the meeting, calling the united support of Ukraine “so inspiring” while acknowledging the devastation in Ukraine.

Irina Fursman told the council she’s kept in contact with the students who visited the city 10 years ago, and shared the personal account from one of them. She noted, “Not everybody’s fighting, there’s a lot of bravery and there’s also a lot of sadness and just survival at this moment.”
