2nd man charged in deadly September shooting outside Bullwinkle’s

A second man is now charged in connection to a September shooting outside a bar in Minneapolis’ Cedar-Riverside neighborhood that left several people hurt and one man dead.

Court records show Deovion Telon Echoles, 30, is charged with first-degree riot, second-degree assault and possession of a gun by a prohibited person.

The charges are in connection to the incident at Bullwinkle’s Saloon in the early morning hours of Sept. 9.

According to court documents, police were called to Bullwinkle’s just before 1 a.m. for a fight during a private event that escalated to gunshots.

Witnesses and surveillance video indicated that two customers were asked to leave but refused, leading to a physical confrontation. A short time later, shots were fired inside the bar, and several people then started leaving.

The criminal complaint states that the two men who were asked to leave stumbled out of the doorway and then ran away. Meanwhile, 34-year-old Cortez Maurice Crumble fell in the doorway after getting shot. Crumble later died from his injuries.

Court documents add that, as the two men ran away, four other men — three of whom had guns — then ran out of the bar and started firing shots at the two men. At that time, other unknown people across the street started firing back.

Police say Echoles and 34-year-old Devord Allen were two of the three men who fired shots at the men who were asked to leave. Allen, who is currently in custody on a federal hold, was charged last month with first-degree riot and two counts of second-degree assault. He was on federal parole at the time, court documents state, and later admitted to selling the gun he used to someone else.

Echoles and Allen also each suffered non-life-threatening gunshot wounds and were treated at a hospital. At least one other person also suffered injuries in the shooting, and a Metro Transit bus was struck by gunfire, too.

If convicted, the riot charge carries up to 20 years in prison, gun possession by a prohibited person can be punished by up to 15 years in jail, and second-degree assault has a maximum sentence of seven years behind bars.

Because of the federal hold, no court proceedings have been scheduled at this time for Allen. Echoles made his first court appearance Wednesday, and a judge set his bond at $750,000. His next hearing is scheduled for Dec. 19.
