Updated: 07/08/2009 9:36 AM KSTP.com | Are we turning the page on our cool spring?
Normally the winds aloft go through a big change in early May, pushing the cold winter air northward into Canada. For some reason or another that didn't happen this year, until now! The Polar Front at the surface travels along with the shift in the jet stream's winds. It just so happened that we've been on the cool side of that Polar Front most of the spring with only a few exceptions. Finally the jet stream is showing signs of a long term shift northward, which in turn has caused the Polar Front to move north of us as well. Temperatures will actually climb to readings above normal and stay there for possibly a couple of weeks. This also means thunderstorms will become more prevalent over the next several days and weeks. With an increase in humidity and warmth, severe weather will also come back into the picture across the Upper Midwest. I think it's safe to put the heavy jackets away and start dragging out the shorts and swim suits again! It still may turn out to be a cooler than normal summer, but at least it won't be "cold" anymore! Have a great day! Meteorologist Dave Dahl |
