This would have been a good winter to sign a contract with your snow-removal company rather than going with a per-time payment schedule!

Snow plowing companies are finally getting the snow they need to stay in business.  After several winters with meager snowfall totals, this season is beginning to act like a good old-fashioned Minnesota winter!  You have to go back 5 winters to find one that had above average snowfall when we had 66.3 inches the winter of 2003-04.  Since that time the heaviest snowfall was only 44.6 inches last winter, which we all know wasn't much of a snowy winter.

Even though it seems like it's been very snowy so far this season, we're very close to what's normal for this time of year.  Since we average about 10 inches during the month of November and 10 inches during the month of December, we're about right on with 15 inches so far this season since we're only half way through the month of December.  If you do have a service take care of the snow removal duties at your house or business, you might want to take a close look at the distribution of snowfall on average here in eastern Minnesota and western Wisconsin

We average 16 days during the snow season with at least an inch of snowfall.  We have on average 8 days during the winter when at least 2 inches of snow falls.  Four-inch snowfalls are more rare with only an average of 3 times during the winter getting that much snow or more.  This might be surprising to many but we only have an average of 1 day during the winter season when at least 6 inches of snow falls.

If you're trying to plan your snowfall removal budget for the rest of the winter the next few numbers might help you out.  There's a literal traffic jam of storms lined up out in the Pacific, which should end up giving us a total of 25 to 30 inches of snow for the month of December.  January looks like a heavier than normal month for snow as well when we could end up with 15 to 20 inches, whereas our normal amount is 13.5 inches.  We should lighten up the load in February and March but we'll probably still end up with a foot of snow each month leaving us with a total for the winter of about 70 to 75 inches.

Have a great day!
