State Patrol: 121 Crashes, 60 Spin-outs in 12-Hour Span Monday

December 04, 2017 10:15 PM

The haste in which fall changed to winter on Monday could be to blame for a number of traffic crashes and spin-outs throughout the state.

The Minnesota State Patrol said via Twitter Monday evening there were 121 vehicle crashes and 60 spin-outs between 8 a.m. and 8:45 p.m.

Ten crashes involved injuries, and one crash involved a fatality.

The State Patrol reported an 87-year-old Murdock man was killed when the Ford Escape in which he was traveling was struck by a Dodge Ram on Highway 12 in Benson about 12:43 p.m.

The report listed the road condition at that time as wet.

Meanwhile, 11 inches of snow had fallen in Roosevelt, near Roseau, by 5 p.m., according to the National Weather Service in the Twin Cities. Holt, in Marshall County, had received 7 inches by 1:30 p.m. Monday. The weather service in Duluth reports that by Tuesday night, 8-12 inches will have fallen on the Iron Range, and 6-8 in Duluth.

The Twin Cities will likely see between 1 and 3 inches of snow by the time it's done falling before Tuesday morning's commute. KSTP Chief Meteorologist Dave Dahl says that commute will likely be slow, especially on the side streets.

A winter storm warning in effect much of Monday for western Minnesota was set to expire at midnight. Same for a winter weather advisory in effect for much of central and eastern Minnesota, including the Twin Cities.

Tuesday's high temperature is expected to reach just 20 degrees, marking a stretch of four such days in a row before a slight weekend warmup.
