The state high school league will allow schools to shorten certain games in an effort to fit in baseball and softball seasons following recent winter-like weather that has led to statewide postponements.

The Minnesota State High School League on Wednesday issued a notice to member schools that lays out how they can shorten the length of baseball and softball games as part of a condensed season spurred by unseasonable weather.

Single games must continue to be played at seven innings or until a "regulation game" is completed, per National Federation of State High School Association rules.

But schools playing one another will be able to agree to two five-inning games as a double-header, or one seven-inning game and one five inning-game, according to the letter from the MSHSL Executive Director Erich Martens, sent to the activities or athletic directors of member schools on Wednesday.

The letter also addresses a shortage of game officials by allowing waivers in certain situations.

"While every effort should be made to have two registered officials, the following officiating arrangements can be used by following the waiver process:

  • Softball: One registered official is required and two are recommended. Using a single non-registered official requires a waiver.
  • Baseball: Two registered officials are required. Using one registered and one nonregistered official or using only one registered official requires a waiver."
