West Metro Road Construction Begins on Highways 62, 55

A resurfacing project is underway on Highway 62 from Interstate 494 to Tracy Avenue in Edina.

The road is down to one lane in each direction, and not only is it slow, it's been a little confusing for drivers.

There are orange barrels and 'road closed' signs all over just east of the 494 Interstate and Highway 62 intersection.

This is the start of a nearly $8 million resurfacing project that will take until the end of October to complete. It means there will be lane and ramp closures, detours and delays.

On day one, it's proving to be a little confusing for drivers in this very busy part of the west metro.

5 Eyewitness News caught one driver trying to turn off Highway 62 onto a closed road, and another was trying to cross Highway 62 traffic on a red light.

"It's not complicated construction work but it's in a busy area, in an area with a lot of businesses and schools, so it will impact people," MnDOT spokesperson Dave Aeikens said.

There was significant backup on Interstate 494 South during the Monday morning commute, as two of the three ramp lanes were closed, funneling traffic onto Highway 62 East.

MnDOT says a traffic signal could have been part of the problem with that, and they hope to have it corrected soon.

"We don't want traffic stopped on the interstate so we're working on that," Aeikens said.

To add to the west metro road woes, Highway 55 road construction also started today.

That project has Highway 55 closed for nearly eight miles from Rockford to Buffalo from now through August, sending detoured traffic south to Delano and back north.
