Twin Cities Marathon Participants Warned About I-35W Closure

September 29, 2017 07:50 PM

Medtronic Twin Cities Marathon weekend officially kicked off Friday with a Health and Fitness Expo at the St. Paul RiverCentre. It's a type of reunion for many participants who come from out of town and get to see friends who race with them.

The marathon and 10-mile races are Sunday morning, and the 5K and 10K races are Saturday morning.

Marathon organizers expect 30,000 runners and about 300,000 spectators. The event has grown rapidly in recent years, up from only 8,000 runners 17 years ago.

Executive Director Virginia Brophy Achman said organizers have been doing their best to spread the word about the closing of I-35W from I-94 to Highway 62 this weekend.

"We just want to ask runners to be prepared and think ahead of time, and look at their routes ... and think about other ways you can get there," Achman said. " We're going to really encourage light rail and transit and carpooling. But leave extra early, leave enough time."

She says everyone should be prepared for delays on side roads along the race course between Minneapolis and St. Paul.
