A stretch of Interstate 35W in Minneapolis will close this weekend as crews demolish the 38th Street bridge.

The Minnesota Department of Transportation said the stretch of the freeway between Interstate 94 and Highway 62 will close beginning at 10 p.m. Friday. I-35W South will be open to traffic south of 46th Street.

The detour will utilize Interstate 394, Highway 100 and Highway 62. The stretch of I-35W will reopen to traffic by 5 a.m. Monday.

A release said crews will begin closing the on-and-off ramps to I-35W around one hour before the interstate closes.

The 38th Street bridge itself closed at 6 a.m. Friday. Westbound traffic will be detoured using Third Avenue South, 35th Street and Nicollet Avenue. Eastbound traffic will be detoured using Nicollet Avenue, 36th Street and Third Avenue South.

To complete work at the bridge, the ramp from 36th Street to I-35W South will close at 2 a.m. Friday. That ramp will remain closed through the fall of 2021.
