MnDOT Offers 1st Look at New St. Croix Crossing Bridge

For the first time, 5 EYEWITNESS NEWS shows you the top, inside and bottom of the new $600 million St. Croix Crossing bridge.

The bridge is expected to open in late 2017, connecting motorists between Oak Park Heights, Minnesota, and St. Joseph, Wisconsin.

Engineers with the Minnesota Department of Transportation gave us a unique tour of the bridge and told us it should open, without further delays in time to meet its revised grand opening target date.

"The delays in the past were hard to avoid because there was a bunch of similar projects going on at the same time, which created a shortage of product supplies and skilled workers for the bridge," MnDOT Project Director Terry Zoller said. "There were some weather incidents that affected the project as well, but this year everything is moving along well and we should not have a problem meeting our deadline for late next year."

We reported last month that MnDOT had extended its lease for office space in Stillwater for this project until 2018, but MnDOT said that extension will give them some breathing room and extra time to finish minor work during the warmer months in early spring and summer of 2018 and it does not indicate they are expecting further delays.
