Along with Deep Freeze, Refreeze for Metro Area Roads

Minnesota Department of Transportation spokesman Kevin Gutnecht said despite no new snowfall, drivers still need to slow down in the metro area because the frigid temperatures continue to create slick spots.

"Salt and road chemicals don't work well, if at all, in these frigid conditions," Gutnecht said. "And the moisture coming out of the exhaust systems of vehicles complicates things because it freezes so quickly, and that's when black ice starts to take hold and that's what's happening."

The Minnesota State Patrol reported hundreds of accidents throughout the metro area over the weekend, and more than 1,000 accidents or spin outs across the state since Thursday.

Gutnecht said MnDOT crews are still working around the clock out on the roads and are using the holiday break to try and get ahead of the problem spots before regular rush hour traffic starts up again Tuesday.

"If there has been a blessing in all of this it would be the timing of when this cold snap hit us," he said. "Because there has not been as much traffic on the roads."

Gutnecht also encouraged drivers to pay close attention to the roads, slow down and allow extra time. And he offered an important piece of advice if you do have an accident or spin off the road:

"Do not get out of your vehicle, under any circumstance, when you are on a busy road and have an accident, because it is still dangerous. It is best to stay in your car and wait for help to arrive."
