It’s a new look for Interstate 694.
The new configuration between Highway 10 and Interstate 35E caused a nearly six-mile backup during the Friday morning commute, according to traffic reporter Josie Smith.
Drivers need to think fast and make sure they choose the proper lane if they are following that route.
The right and left lane along I-694 eastbound between Arden Hills and Little Canada is separated by a concrete median barrier.
If you need to exit the interstate within the work zone, take the right lane. If you plan to travel straight through the construction area, use the left lane.
The westbound side of I-694 is already reduced to two lanes in the same area. The new layout will stay in place until November.
Drivers on Highway 10 eastbound and Interstate 35W southbound can also expect some added delays as motorists adjust to the new configuration.
This is the second and final year of construction along I-694. When it’s all said and done, there will be three lanes in both directions. Learn more about the project here.
