The city of Minneapolis has released a new study that analyzed more than 3,000 pedestrian crashes over the past 10 years in an effort to make improvements at those trouble spots.
Hennepin Avenue South and West Lake Street in Uptown notched 20 pedestrian crashes during that time. The study showed 20 percent of those crashes ended in serious injury or death, making it the intersection with the highest number of what the city called "major accidents."
Just to the east, the study shows, Lyndale Avenue South and West Lake Street had the highest number of overall pedestrian accidents since 2006, with 24. That is followed by Lyndale Avenue North and Broadway Avenue West, with 23; and the Franklin Avenue-Nicollet Avenue intersection had the third highest, with 21 pedestrian accidents.
The report offers a number of safety improvement options, including more left turn lanes, extended curbs, pedestrian refuges and slower speed limits.
Mayor-elect Jacob Frey told 5 EYEWITNESS NEWS the dubious list is a good thing to have because it gives the city a blueprint to make citywide improvements.
"All of these intersections need attention," Frey said. "And there are things we now know we can do to make sure, with more people living and working in the city, that those improvements get made, and we will get it done to make things safer."
The City Council's Transportation and Public Works Committee will discuss the full report Tuesday at its 1:30 p.m. meeting.
