Metro Transit says a light rail train that was derailed Thursday morning in downtown MInneapolis has been moved and service has continued.
Once the rail is inspected, Metro Transit believes trains will be able to move in downtown Minneapolis.
Authorities believe the train struck a rail utility box lid that hadn't been properly secured
The derailment, which took place shortly before 11 a.m., shut down light rail service between U.S. Bank Stadium and Target Field.
The train left the tracks near the intersection of South 5th Street and 2nd Avenue South.
"As the train was going over, one of those lids came up, polled onto the rail and derailed the train," Metro Transit spokesperson Howie Padilla said.
"The thing we're really thankful for is no injuries, no major damage to the train, and no major damage to the overhead system."
Metro Transit said Green Line service was running as usual between U.S. Bank Stadium and Union Depot in downtown St. Paul, and Blue Line service was normal between the football stadium and Mall of America.
Replacement buses still operating btw Target Field & Government Plaza; light rail service continues as normal at all other stations. Adam Trimbo, who works nearby, said it was scary to think would could have happened with a derailment in the downtown area.
"That could've gone off the rails completely and hit one of these buildings," he said.
Though Jean Paul Beaulieu, who was looking on, said it had to be even more frightening for those on-board the train at the time.
"I can only imagine what it would have been like to be on this train when this happened," he said. "I bet it was terrifying."
