Those planning to drive through downtown Minneapolis this weekend should plan for delays as the result of roadwork.
Crews will be working on Interstate 94 and 394 starting Friday night.
With both the fishing opener and Mother's Day this weekend, there will likely be an increase in traffic in the area.
In terms of the closures, the westbound side of Interstate 394 will close from downtown Minneapolis to Highway 100. Crews will be re-striping I-394 and adding a lane in preparation for the lane closures that are starting in mid-June along Interstate 35W in South Minneapolis.
KSTP Traffic Reporter Josie Smith said downtown traffic will have access to the 394 carpool lanes. A detour will already be in place for I-94 traffic due to that closure.
Meanwhile, for the second weekend in a row, I-94 will close.
This time, the road will shut down between Highway 55/Olson Memorial Highway and I-35W. Crews will continue repairs on the Irene Hixon Whitney pedestrian bridge.
Westbound traffic will be detoured to Highway 280, I-35W, and then Interstate 694. Eastbound traffic will be detoured to Highway 55. Smith said drivers can also follow I-694 to the north. Both closures along I-94 and I-394 will go into place starting at 10 p.m. Friday until 5 a.m. Monday.
Some drivers might opt for taking Highway 62 or Interstate 494 instead, but there will be some single lane road work on Highway 62 near 34th Ave in Minneapolis this weekend. Smith said.
Additionally, for the second weekend in a row, Hennepin/Lyndale Avenue will also close from Dunwoody Boulevard to Oak Street.
The final I-94 closure is scheduled for next weekend.
In St. Paul, the ramp from I-94 westbound to Mounds Boulevard is closing this weekend too. The ramp shuts down at 9 p.m. Friday and will reopen by 5 a.m. Monday. Crews will be doing some sewer work during the closure.
Drivers can use Highway 61, Interstate 35E, or Highway 52/7th Street instead. Next week, watch for overnight lane restrictions on I-94 eastbound from Mounds Boulevard in St. Paul to McKnight Road in Maplewood. Crews will work Monday through Friday from 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. each day. Learn more about the project.
In the southeast metro, there will be lane closures along Highway 13 between Savage and Prior Lake on Saturday. The roadway will be single lane beginning at 4 a.m. Saturday between County Road 44 and Franklin Avenue. The work is expected to clear by midnight.
