WATCH 5 EYEWITNESS NEWS for the latest traffic and weather updates.

A section of southbound University Avenue/Highway 47 in Fridley was closed Thursday morning after a vehicle struck a pedestrian.

KSTP Traffic Reporter Josie Smith said the crash occurred at the intersection of Osborne Road.

According to a KSTP crew at the scene, traffic was delayed in the area as the result of the southbound lane closures. Northbound lanes remained open, Smith said.

Southbound lanes reopened just before 8:30 a.m.

According to Fridley police, the pedestrian, in critical condition, was transported to a nearby hospital where he later died. Authorities have not yet released his identity.

The male driver who struck the pedestrian remained at the scene and has been cooperating with police. Authorities said neither drugs nor alcohol appeared to be factors in the incident.

Police said the crash did not occur in a marked crosswalk.
