It took a little longer than expected, but the lane closure drivers have been warned about for weeks is now in place along I-94 westbound near downtown Minneapolis.

The roadway has been reduced to two lanes for the next four months.

The work was scheduled to be in place on Monday morning, but the rain prevented crews from putting the barriers into place.

The lane closure is related to the larger I-35W: Downtown to the Crosstown project. There are lane restrictions in place already for both directions of I-35W from 43rd Street to I-94.

So far, the biggest impacts to traffic have been on the southbound side where there are only two lanes open. Some drivers have been using Highway 100 and Hiawatha Avenue instead, so expect more congestion on those routes.

In 2019, The Minnesota Department of Transportation will open a third lane for southbound motorists. The configuration will stay in place until the fall of 2021. Learn more about the project.
