Drivers on Interstate 35 south of Owatonna will face single-lane traffic and periodic delays in both directions beginning after 6 p.m. Friday, the Minnesota Department of Transportation reports.
MnDOT said the southbound lanes of I-35 will be closed until mid-September as three bridges are replaced. The Straight River Rest Area will be closed throughout the construction. The northbound rest area is under construction, but is expected to open later in the summer.
A MnDOT release said signs will be posted 10 miles out to alert drivers of potential backups. And flashing lights will be activated when backups are occurring.
The work is part of a two-year project to replace six bridges on I-35 and four bridges on Highway 14 south of Owatonna.
The I-35 bridges over the Straight River, Turtle Creek and the Union Pacific Railroad are scheduled for replacement. As are the Highway 14 bridges over the Straight River and Union Pacific Railroad. Bridges southbound on I-35 and eastbound on Highway 14 will be replaced this year.
The adjacent northbound and westbound bridges will be replaced in 2018. The project is expected to cost $29.6 million.
