Humanoid Robot Delivers Speech to Area Chamber

The guest speaker at the White Bear Lake Chamber of Commerce Tuesday was truly unlike any before her.

The Chamber meetings typically have guests who share their life or career experiences. On Tuesday, that was the case until the host said, "It's my pleasure to introduce Sophia today. Sophia is known for a human like appearance and behavior."

The emphasis was on the human-like description.

Sophia is what's called a humanoid robot. Her face, skin, hair, and even clothes are human-like. She told the crowd at Century College she can already see faces, make eye contact, understand speech, answer questions, make facial expressions, and clearly, as was witnessed Tuesday, give a speech before a large crowd.

Her big message, though, was what she may one day be able to do in the area of health care for the aging population, such as providing at-home care.

During the speech, the robot said, "We can provide some of the same services as a human at a fraction of the cost, making this kind of in-home care more affordable for everyone. Robots at a human scale like me will navigate houses in the same way people do and use the same tools and spaces."

We're told she's not there yet. Though Sophia is said to have technology that can improve through conversations and experiences. She also gains data through hardware improvements.
