No. 3 Duluth East (24-2-3) used a four goal second period including a key three goal flurry to defeat St. Michael-Albertville (23-6) 5-0 on Thursday afternoon in the 2018 MSHSL Class AA Boys’ Hockey Tournament quarterfinals at Xcel Energy Center.
The Greyhounds, in their 23rd trip to the state tournament, will play No. 2 Edina in the state semifinals on Friday, March 9 at 6 p.m. at Xcel Energy Center while the Knights will face Lakeville North in the consolation semifinal at 3M Arena at Mariucci in Minneapolis on Friday, March 9 at 10 a.m.
The game was closely contested early on as the teams each put seven shots on goal in the first period with St. Michael-Albertville delivering a 19-13 overall shot advantage.
But they faced a 1-0 deficit at the period break as senior forward Garrett Worth broke the scoreless tie late in the period in the 15th minute. It was the first of a four point day for Worth, who had a hat trick and an assist.
Duluth East methodically built a 2-0 lead into the second period as Worth scored again in the third minute, giving him two goals in a span of five and a half minutes elapsed time.
Late in the period, the Greyhounds ran away from the Knights, bursting for three goals in a 1:45 stretch of play starting with sophomore Logan Anderson’s goal at the 12:43 mark in the 13th minute to Worth’s third goal at the 14:28 mark of the 15th minute. Wolf assisted on senior forward Ian Mageau’s goal in between at 13:53.

The teams stayed out of the net the rest of the way and in the end, it was St. Michael-Albertville firing 59 total shots to Duluth East’s 55, although the Greyhounds put 34 on net to 28 for the Knights.
Duluth East senior goalie Parker Kleive came through with an impressive shutout performance, with numerous highlight reel caliber saves among his 28 on the day.
The Knights, in their first-ever state tournament run, were led offensively by sophomore forward Adam Flammang’s 11 total shot attempts including six on goal.
