The All-American sport is reaching places it never has before, thanks to a lot of local generosity.

The "Baseball in Benin" organization began two years ago to help bring competitive youth baseball to kids in the West African country of Benin.

This past weekend, money donated at the "Little League Wood Bat Tournament" held in Robbinsdale supported that cause.

Every dollar donated during the tournament will be spent to help introduce America's pastime to Benin by sending shoes, gloves, bats and the construction of a baseball field for kids.

In one year, the league in Benin has grown from two teams with 25 kids to five teams with 65 kids as interest in the sport continues to grow.

"Baseball in Benin" hopes more kids get involved and some day players can come here to play baseball in the United States.

The tournament hoped to raise about $5,000 in donations, which is still several thousand dollars short of the money needed to build a field in Benin.
