Minneapolis City Council Suggests Bird-Safe Glass for New Vikings Stadium

The Minneapolis City Council says they will formally ask the 200,000 square feet of glass being installed at the new Vikings stadium be bird-safe.

The request will come as a suggestion and not a demand to the Minnesota Vikings and the Minnesota Sports Facilities Authority in charge of building the stadium.

The city's request is cited from the $150 million of sales tax revenue Minneapolis is contributing to the $1 billion project, with city officials arguing the opinions of the residents within the city should be taken into consideration.

The Audubon Society of Minnesota praised the resolution. The group is concerned that many birds will die from colliding with the large windows slated to be installed at the stadium.

The Vikings say the team and the authority overseeing the stadium have agreed to implement lighting procedures to prevent bird collisions. The team also is discussing Audubon's recommendations for the stadium's lighting design.

The bird-safe glass is a more-glaring material that will be more costly to incorporate into the stadium, adding another $1.1 million to the price tag.
