Despite a rough regular season, the Lakeville South Cougars were able to rally at sections to earn a trip to the State tournament.
This is the first time in the school's history that the Cougars baseball team has made it to the tournament.
“Lakeville South has never been to state, it means a lot to us as a team to be the 1st team to do that," senior Cody Metz said. "The coaches put trust in us and turned the season around.”
With a record of 2-17 in the regular season, the Cougars playoff hopes appeared grim coming into sections. Lakeville South finished 5-1 in the Section 1AAA tournament, claiming the section championship and a trip to state.
During the Section tournament, the Cougars defeated Farmington, Northfield and Faribault before going 2-1 against Rochester Mayo to win the title.
"Tough regular season, but we pulled together after that first win in sections," senior Mitch Maurer said. "We just knew we could do it and we came together as a team, we just pulled together and got to state."
Lakeville South will face Mahtomedi in the first round of the State tournament on Thursday, June 12 at Midway Stadium.
Mahtomedi is currently ranked second in the state with a record of 23-1.
Lakeville South won their first game of the season on April 15 but struggled to close out games throughout the month of May.
