Lou Hudson, University of Minnesota basketball legend and former NBA star, died Friday. He was 69. Hudson played for the Gophers from 1964-66, and was a 1991 inductee into the Minnesota Athletics Hall of Fame.

Hudson was an All-America selection and All-Big Ten first-team selection in 1965. Known as "Sweet Lou," he finished his career with 1,329 points, which ranks 14th on the Gophers' all-time list.

His No. 14 jersey was retired in 1994.

Hudson was the fourth-overall pick in the 1966 NBA Draft by the St. Louis Hawks. He spent 13 years in the NBA, was named an All-Star six times and scored nearly 18,000 career points, good for 12th on the all-time scoring list when he retired.

The Hawks retired his No. 23 jersey. It is only one of three to be hung above the court.

A native of Greensboro, N.C., Hudson was a four-sport star at Dudley High School. He was inducted into the North Carolina Sports Hall of Fame in 1988, the Georgia Sports Hall of Fame in 2002 and the Atlanta Sports Hall of Fame in 2007.
