Twins third base prospect Miguel Sano, 20, will miss the 2014 season.

He underwent an MRI on Friday and the results indicate that Tommy John surgery is needed. He felt soreness in his right elbow during an exhibition on Thursday.

Sano was shut down over the winter over concerns from his sore right elbow.

The Twins' doctors and Dr. James Andrews - the independent second opinion- both recommended rest and rehab instead of surgery at that time.

He was diagnosed with a strained ulnar collateral ligament, but came out of another check-up at Twins Fest in January with a go-ahead for spring training.
