Takendra (Tia) Elbert, a 5-foot-8-inch senior guard at Tartan High School, took over the state scoring lead from Carlie Wagner with a 55-point effort Friday night against Richfield. Earlier this season, Elbert scored 29 points in a loss to Hill-Murray. Elbert now averages 36.6 points per game to Wagner’s 35.5. (Coming into this week Wagner led 36.4 to 36 ppg. Elbert also led the state in scoring at 36 ppg a year ago.)

Unfortunately we didn’t see Tia’s performance, so we asked her how she scored those 55 points. “I scored in a variety of ways,” she said. “I hit a few 3-pointers, drove to the basket on the break, and mostly relied on long and short jumpers.”

“I was also 16-of-17 from the free throw line,” she added.

It has been a memorable senior year for Elbert, but not always for the right reasons. She has had ankle problems throughout the year and missed several games earlier in the year. Still, she came back in time to score her 3,000th point (while on her way to a 40 point effort that night) on Friday, January 17. Four nights later she broke Jake Sullivan’s school career scoring record of 3,019 points (scoring a total of 41 that night).

Now, she is well past the 3,200 mark and at her current rate will be approaching 3,500 career points heading into the post-season section playoffs. She could conceivably rank in the top six or seven on the Minnesota girls all-time scoring list before she’s done, assuming no more injury trouble.

So, come to think of it, how’s the ankle. Are you 100 percent? “Yes, for the most part. I could use some more strength and range of motion in my ankle, but it’s nothing too hindering,” Elbert said. We would have guessed not.
