The owner of the Minnesota United professional soccer team is looking at land right next to Target Field to possibly build a new stadium.

Bill McGuire could also have an ally in the owners of the Minnesota Twins. 5 EYEWITNESS NEWS has confirmed that officials of the United and the Twins recently traveled to Kansas City to look at a $200 million, 18,000 seat stadium that hosts a Major League Soccer (MLS) franchise.

McGuire could be trying to beat the owner of the Vikings, Zygi and Mark Wilf, to the punch and land an MLS franchise before the Wilfs bring a team here to play in the new Vikings stadium when it opens in 2016.

Right now, the United and Twins officials are only exploring this possibility and do not have a timeline or a cost estimate.

The last MLS franchise awarded to Orlando, Fla., cost $60 million just to get the team to play there.

A spokesperson for the Vikings tells us the "Wilfs are actively pursuing an MLS franchise and met with the league commissioner just last week." The Wilfs have a five-year exclusive option to bring a team into the new Vikings stadium.
