Coming to a final price on the new Vikings stadium is more difficult and taking a lot longer than the Minnesota Sports Facility expected.

Minnesota Sports Facilities Authority Chairwoman Michele Kelm-Helgen told The Associated Press on Wednesday that her staff, team representatives and the main contractor are still working to reach a "guaranteed maximum price" for construction work.

The project is capped at $975 million, but not all of that goes into the actual structure.

They are looking at things in the stadium that can be changed so they can save money. They are tweaking the costs for minor things like paint, but aren't changing major parts of the design.

The authority had hoped to reach a price deal this week so the Vikings could finalize loans on a $477 million private share. The state won't sell bonds for a $498 million public portion until the Vikings do that.

They are hoping to reach a decision on pricing sometime this month.

Kelm-Helgen says they are still on track to open the stadium in July of 2016 but there is no date for groundbreaking.
