'Redskins' Deemed Racial Slur at Smithsonian Symposium
There’s a growing mood in Washington, D.C., that the city’s football team, the “Redskins,” is a racist name.
During a symposium yesterday at the Smithsonian American Indian Museum, Redskins were at the top of the list of hurtful names and racial stereotypes.
People who attended say they might consider protesting at training camp or asking the team’s popular quarterback to get involved. The team’s owner and the NFL Commissioner both support the name.
Last year, the University of North Dakota dropped the name the Fighting Sioux. The NCAA called the nickname hostile and abusive.
The school has not yet picked a new name.
