Mauer Placed on Revocable Waivers, Says He Wants to Stay
The Minnesota Twins placed catcher Joe Mauer on trade waivers Tuesday.
The announcement came after the Boston Red Sox, who have been interested in Mauer, purged more than $275 million in contract obligations last week, according to Ken Rosenthal of Fox Sports.
The 29-year-old catcher reportedly has about $142.5 million on his contract. Mauer’s waiver expired at noon Central Standard Time Wednesday.
Any player under contract can be placed on waivers at any time. After the July 31 trade deadline and through to the end of the season, however, a team must place a player on waivers if that player is to be eligible to be traded.
