State Girls Hockey: Breck Blasts Proctor/Hermantown in Class A Semi

February 23, 2018 03:31 PM

The second-seeded Breck Mustangs (18-10-1) are headed to the MSHSL Class A State Championship game. The Mustangs beat the upset-minded Proctor-Hermantown Mirage (17-13-0) Friday morning by a final score of 6-0.

Breck wasted no time taking an early 1-0 lead in the first period, as Emily Zumwinkle scored on a beautiful pass play involving Gabby Billing and Olivia Mobley. However, that was the only goal scored by either team in the opening period of play. Both the Mustangs and Mirage had two separate breakaway opportunities in the latter stages of the first period, but goalies Uma Corniea and Ryan Gary preserved the 1-0 score with a handful of monster saves.

In the second period, Ashley Halverson extended Breck’s lead with a power play goal at 4:39. From there, everything seemed to roll the Mustangs way. Zumwinkle scored her second goal of the game with nine minutes remaining in the second period, before Shae Messner extended the lead to 4-0 with a breakaway goal at 14:39 in the second period.

Proctor-Hermantown tried to recover, but the deficit was too big to overcome as the Mustangs tacked on two more goals in the third period en route to the 6-0 victory. With the win, Breck advances to Saturday’s Championship game which is set to begin at 4 p.m. at Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul, Minnesota. The Mirage will play in the third place game at 9 a.m. on Saturday.Behind
