St. Michael-Albertville Claims School's 8th State Wrestling Team Title

St. Michael-Albertville beat top-seeded Shakopee 30-25 to claim the Class AAA team championship at the State Wrestling Tournament Thursday night in St. Paul.

It is the Knights' eighth team championship and first since their shared the title with Apple Valley in 2013.

St. Michael-Albertville jumped out to a good cushion early on when Nathan Nygaard and Patrick McKee won with pins at 120 and 126 pounds respectively.

After falling behind 18-3, Shakopee got back into with a Sam Webster tech fall at 145 pounds and an Alex Lloyd pin at 152 pounds.

But St. Michael-Albertville won four of the final six bouts to win 30-25. Nolan Schmitz clinched the victory with a 6-3 decision at 220 pounds for the Knights.

Kasson-Mantorville beat Fairmont/Martin County West 49-9 to win the Class AA Championship and Zumbrota-Mazeppa beat Frazee 31-19 to claim the Class A Championship.
