Moorhead Reaches State Hockey Final for 8th Time

Kyler Kleven's goal 4:06 into the third period turned out to be the margin-of-victory as the 3rd-seeded Moorhead Spuds beat Lakeville South 3-2 in the Class AA Boys Hockey State Semifinals.  The win moves Moorhead into the State Championship game for the eighth time where they seek their first-ever state title.

A Lakeville South turnover sprang Moorhead on a 2-on-1 break. Kleven took the shot himself, picking out the top left corner for a 3-1 lead the Spuds would never surrender.


South's Zachary Bauer opened the scoring 15:16 into the first period, giving the Cougars a 1-0 lead through one period.

Moorhead's Jack Stetz tied it at 1-1 3:24 into the second, then Carter Randklev hit another for the Spuds from an impossible angle to the side fo the goal for a 2-1 lead.

Lakeville South's Joshua Ess trimmed the Spuds lead to 3-2 with 1:27 to go, but that's as close as the Cougars would get.

Moorhead goalie LAnce Lonard made 39 saves - including 20 int he third period - to earn the win.

South outshot Moorhead 41-32 in the game, 21-8 in the third period.

South keeper Isaiah DiLaura made 29 saves.

Moorhead advances to Saturday night's Class AA Championshipa 7:00 p.m. where they will face the winner of the other AA Semi between Eden Prairie and Grand Rapids.
