Boys Hockey: #2 Minnetonka Wins First of Season's Three Clashes w/ #1 Edina

December 26, 2017 11:42 PM

After falling behind #1-ranked Edina 2-1 in the first period, #2 Minnetonka scored four unanswered goals to earn a 5-2 win in a clash of unbeatens on opening day at the Schwan's Cup Tournament at Ridder Arena.

Edina's Jett Jungels and Sammy Walker scored two minutes apart to give the Hornets a 2-1 lead after Minnetonka had taken an early lead on a Josh Luedtke goal.

Minnetonka seized a pivotal moment late in the first period, after their Luke Loheit took a hooking penalty.

With Edina on the power play, Tonka's Joe Molenaar scored an end-to-end shorthanded goal that tied the ame 1-1 through one period.

From there, the Skippers took over.

Minnetonka owned the second period with a pair of Matt Koethe goals 1:20 apart and a late period tally from Jack Bayless that made it four unanswered.

The Skippers smothered the Hornets from there to preserve the 5-2 win.

Minnetonka outshot Edina 34-16 and are the first team all season to hold the Hornets to fewer than six goals.

The teams will play twice more during the regular season - once at each home rink.
