Girls' State Hockey Tournament: Defending Champ Edina Advances to AA Semifinals

February 22, 2018 08:21 PM

The top-seeded Edina Hornets (25-2-1) cruised to the Minnesota State High School League AA Semifinal Thursday thanks to a resounding 4-0 win over the Brainerd Warriors (23-5-0).

Two minutes into the game, Edina’s Emily Oden gave her team a 1-0 lead it would never relinquish. However, it looked like Brainerd was on track to end the period in just a one goal deficit, despite the Hornets 5-on-3 advantage with five minutes remaining in the period. Edina, though, showed why it is the top ranked team in the state, as the team scored its second goal of the game, this time on a tic-tac-toe passing play between Brooke Tucker, Annie Kuehl and Tella Jungels.

The Hornets took a 2-0 lead into the locker room after the first period and tacked on two more goals in the second. CC Bowlby and Olivia Swaim scored Edina’s second period goals, giving the Hornets a 4-0 lead after two periods of play.

Edina continued to put shots on goal in the third and final period of play, but Brainerd goalie Nicole Schulz was there to make every save, giving her team time to try and spark a rally. The Wildcats had two power play opportunities during the third period, but they were unable to score on Hornet goalie Megan Smith, who saved all 10 shots she faced in the game.

With the 4-0 win, Edina advances to Friday’s AA semifinal game set to take place at the Xcel Energy Center at 8 p.m. Brainerd will play in the AA Consolation Semifinal on Friday at 12 p.m. at Ridder Arena.
