Defending Class AA Champs Edina Topple Eden Prairie in State Semifinals

February 24, 2018 08:56 PM

The top-seeded Edina Hornets (27-2-1) prevailed in a closely contested game against the No. 5 Eden Prairie Eagles (19-10-1). The Hornets will have a chance to defend their state title thanks to a 4-2 win over the Eagles Friday evening.

Both teams had chances to score early on, but it was Edina that eventually struck first. The Hornets Olivia Swaim tipped Evelyn Adams pass up and over the outstretched glove of Eden Prairie’s Alexa Dobchuk to give her team a 1-0 with roughly 10 minutes remaining in the first period.

Crystalyn Hengler, though, put the Eagles right back in it, as she scored the equalizer with 13 seconds remaining in the first period. The goal was her 20th of the season and evened the score at 1-1 to end the first period.

Neither team scored in the second period of play, leaving the score deadlocked 1-1 with 17 minutes remaining in regulation. That all changed, though, when a Brooke Tucker slap shot put Edina ahead 2-1 with 15 minutes remaining in regulation. Roughly seven minutes later, Aliyah Lance gave the Hornets a 3-1 edge, as she scored her first goal of the tournament at 8:07 in the third period.

Exactly 10 seconds later, Eden Prairie cut the lead to 3-2, as Ava Wagner scored off the face off with assists to Sydney Langseth and Macy Townsend. With 1:45 remaining in the game, the Eagles opted to pull their goalie for an extra skater, but it was to no avail. Eden Prairie was unable to score, and Edina’s CC Bowlby buried the empty netter with six seconds remaining to clinch the 4-2 victory for the Hornets.

Edina will have a chance to defend its 2017 state title on Saturday in the AA State Championship game. The Hornets will play Centennial at 7 p.m. at the Xcel Energy Center. Eden Prairie will play Eagan in the third place game at 11 a.m.
