Twin Cities native and Bruins forward David Backes is preparing for the World Cup of Hockey by skating with other pro players at Augsburg College.

The U.S. squad gathers Sept. 5-9 in Columbus for training camp, with competitive action starting Sept. 17 in Toronto.

After 10-seasons with the Blues, Backes signed a 5-year, $30 million deal with Boston this summer. The Wild did express interest.

Backes, 32, played in high school at Spring Lake Park, and in college at Minnesota State-Mankato.

KSTP's Darren Wolfson took in a recent Backes skate, and chatted with him afterwards.
