Boys Hockey: Edina Rocks Wayzata in Section Final

Edina rang up three goals in the first period and four more in the second on the way to an 8-1 demolition of Wayzata in the Section 6AA Final. The win sends the Hornets to their 27th State Boys Hockey Tournament appearance (38th counting trips by Edina East, West and Morningside).

The Hornets opened up a 4-0 lead :30 into the second period then, after Wayzata broke Garrett Mackay's shutout bid, finished with another run of four straight goals to end the game.

Mackay made 17 saves in the win.

Jett Jungels had a pair of goals and an assist for the Hornets, who had seven different players score in the game.

Edina's Sammy Walker provided four assists. Ben Brinkman registered a goal and two assists.

Colin Schmidt scored early in the second for Wayzata, cutting Edina's lead to 4-1 at the time.

Trevor Wong made 16 saves for the Trojans.

The Hornets made their way back to State after crashing out in the Section Playoffs each of the last two seasons.  The two-year absence followed a run of making State for nine consecutive seasons that included State Championships in 2010, 2013 and 2014.
