The Zephyrs advance to the state semifinals on Friday, March 9 with an 11 a.m. start against the Litchfield/Dassel-Cokato vs No. 3 Orono winner while the Cougars will play in the consolation semifinal on Thursday, March 8 at Mariucci Arena at 10 a.m.

The Cougars were overcoming a significant shot disparity in the first two periods, being outshot 48-22 overall and 24-8 on goal but were able to sneak a pair in the net to build a 2-1 lead in their first state tournament appearance since 2006.

Mahtomedi, looking to avenge last year’s quarterfinal upset loss as the third seed, opened the third period on a high note with a goal in the opening minute to knot the score at two.

Although the game tightened as the intensity mounted down the stretch, Mahtomedi continued to tilt the ice with a solid shot margin.

With just under six minutes to play and the game still tied, the Cougars were whistled for a 5-minute major penalty, giving the Zephyrs a big opportunity. But 39 seconds into the 5-minute major, the Zephyrs would be hit with a penalty, allowing the Cougars to skate 4-on-4 with the Zephyrs.

Mahtomedi clamped down, not allowing a single Mankato East/Loyola shot during the 4-on-4 while the Cougars were also solid defensively, allowing just three shots with only one coming on net.

The Zephyrs pounced when they resumed the power play, scoring the eventual game-winner with just over a minute on the power play (1:02) and just under two minutes to play (1:51).

Senior forward Charlie Bartholomew scored the go-ahead goal for the Zephyrs. He also assisted on the first two Zephyr goals that were each scored by junior forward Joe Paradise.

With just three seconds left on the 5-minute major power play, Mahtomedi junior forward Kory Pilarski scored a late insurance goal in the 17th minute with just 52.2 seconds left in the game for a 4-2 lead.

Cougars points leader Sam Schulz, a junior forward, scored his sixth goal to give him 24 points on the year. The Schulz goal in the 14th minute of the second period gave Mankato East/Loyola its 2-1 lead.

In the net, Mahtomedi goalie Bailey Huber only needed to make nine saves to secure the victory for the Zephyrs while his counterpart, Jack Cusey of Mankato East/Loyola was busy with a 33 save performance including 15 in the opening period.

In the final tally, it was a strong 73-35 shot advantage for Mahtomedi including 37-11 on goal.
