In a conference call with reporters to announce the free-agent signing of running back Latavius Murray, Vikings general manager Rick Spielman confirmed Adrian Peterson will not return to the team in 2017.

"With us signing (Latavius) Murray, Adrian will move on elsewhere," Spielman said Thursday.

A source close to Peterson told KSTP, "He could have said that on March 8 (when the option wasn't picked up). We already knew that, and the rest of the world."

Spielman said he spoke with Peterson earlier Thursday, and to his agent Thursday morning.

Murray will wear No. 25 with the Vikings. He wore No. 28 in Oakland. But he said he has too much respect for Peterson to wear his old number in Minnesota.
